What I Love About My Job

April 28, 2011

I love my job. Sure, there are days when I’d rather stay at home, but for the most part, I really love what I do….I’m lucky.

I love that I only work with women. The small group dynamic has turned out to be a really great thing.

I love seeing these ladies starting out fairly out of shape, but actually doing something about it.

I love that my clients can bring their kids in, if needed. As long as they behave, I’m ok with it.

I love that we can all commiserate about wetting our pants when we jump rope or run sprints! Everyone has to hit the bathroom at least once during our workouts.

I love watching confidence soar and self-image improve. It’s great to see my clients walk with a little swagger and heads held high.

Life is good!

A New PR for my DB Bench Press!

April 27, 2011

I hit a new PR for my Dumbbell Bench Press. . . I was able to do 45lb. for 3 sets of 4!    I’ve got to work on full range of motion.  I can’t believe I can now lift this much weight!  How exciting!

Body Fat Testing @ BAM!

April 25, 2011

My husband is letting me use his skin fold calipers for my clients this week!  Although not everyone will want to have this done, I’ll be able to test skin folds.  I’ll be using a Skyndex . . . like this . . . Although it is programmed with the Jackson/Pollock formula, clients can get an idea of what their body fat percentage is and get a baseline for future reference.

About Me

I’m moving my “About Me” page into a regular post.  I don’t want my site to be too crowded!

My name is Barb Macy and I’m a mom, wife and fitness coach.  I’d previously worked in the fitness industry for many years, but had “let myself go” after I had kids, quit working full-time, and made a couple of cross-country moves with our family.  In August of 2009, I was overweight, out of shape and all of my clothes were too tight.  I was embarrassed and didn’t like how I looked.

With help and encouragement from my husband, I followed his workout plan, joined Weight Watchers, and got myself in the best shape of my adult life. . . even better than when I worked full-time running a cardiac rehab/fitness center and teaching exercise classes five days a week!

I have a degree and have worked in the exercise field since 1987 when I first started teaching water & land aerobics while I was in college. . . over the years, I was a fitness & sports director for a YMCA, I supervised a hospital-based fitness center, taught group fitness classes, did some personal training, and helped train group fitness instructors.  However, after our last family move, I’d gotten away from actively working (and working out) – which contributed to my weight gain.

Being a mom, wife, driver, errand runner, tutor, moving, etc. can take up a lot of time.  I see a lot of women put everything and everyone at the top of their “to do” list.  This happened to me. . . I had every excuse NOT to exercise.  I was very inconsistent and had no true fitness routine.  What I discovered was that I needed to make time for myself and get healthy.  I changed my attitude and put my health and my body at the top of the list.  Now, my workouts and eating right are a priority.  I don’t want to send a message to my children that I don’t care about or take care of myself.

I got busy, changed the way I ate, worked hard and got rid of my body fat.  I went from a tight size 16 jeans to a loose size 10.  In tops, I used to wear a XL. . . now I wear Mediums.  I’ve had to give away all of my old clothes and buy a whole new wardrobe, which was a huge reward in itself.  This past summer, I was even able to wear a 2-piece bathing suit!  I’m over 40 and in the best shape of my adult life.  Now I want to help other women get the same results I’ve gotten.

I opened my own private fitness coaching facility in December 2010 in Mequon, WI with help from my husband.  We cater to women and moms who are unhappy with their bodies and current fitness level.  We focus on strength training and exercise sessions that burn calories and rev the metabolism.  We will help you get results.

If you are interested in starting a strength training program or have questions about strength training for women, in general, my email address is bmacy@bamfitnesscoaching.com.

Spring Break Challenge Winners!

My Spring Break Challenge ended last week. It started in January with 10 people who signed up. Of those 10, I’d say that most of them really watched what they ate, or exercised more, or tracked food, or did all three.  The contest part was to earn points for keeping a food journal, exercising a maximum of 6 days per week, and participating in weekly challenges.  Some of our weekly healthy lifestyle challenges included eating at least 5 servings of fruits/veggies, no alcohol, extra sleep each night, etc.

Here’s what happened . . .

KJ, who won the contest, faithfully logged her food and exercised on her own. She kept records of everything she ate. At the end of the 10 weeks, she lost 4 pounds, but more importantly, she lost almost 3 inches in her waist, and an inch at her waist.

HS, kept a food journal by using LoseIt.com, but wasn’t able to get in much extra exercise besides the 2-3 times each week she came into the gym. She lost .75 inch in her waist, 2 inches in her hips, and 1.5 inches in her thigh.

KF, is a member of Weight Watchers online and tracked her food there. She lost 5 pounds, 1.5 inches from her waist, 1.25 inches from her hips, .25 from her thigh, and .75 in from her arm. She lifted three times a week, plus got in (on average) 2-3 extra days of exercise on her own.

The purpose of this contest or challenge was to demonstrate how keeping a food journal and hard work really can help with weight or fat loss. Even the ladies who didn’t have much, if any, weight to lose, noticed changes in their bodies. . . a pound or two lost, and fitting into jeans or looking great in the bathing suit for spring break was a great reward for hard work.

Congratulations to all my clients. . . you are all working hard, getting strong, and on your way.  Keep it up!
